Green Tara Thangka

The Mother of Compassion and Swift Protection

Green Tara is one of the most beloved and widely venerated deities in Tibetan Buddhism — the female Buddha of compassionate action who is said to respond swiftly to those who call upon her. In thangka painting, Green Tara is depicted with her right foot extended (ready to step into action) and her left hand holding a blue utpala lotus. Our Green Tara thangkas capture her serene yet dynamic presence with vibrant green mineral pigments, intricate floral backgrounds, and luminous gold detailing. We also offer White Tara (longevity), and the rare 21 Tara composition showing all twenty-one forms.

How It's Made

Understanding the production process helps you appreciate the craftsmanship and communicate the product story to your customers.

Tara thangkas follow the standard thangka painting process with particular attention to the deity's graceful pose and serene facial expression. The green skin tone is achieved through layered applications of malachite pigment, building depth and luminosity. Floral elements surrounding Tara are painted with botanical precision. Gold work on Tara's crown, earrings, necklace, and armlets is applied last using fine brushes. The 21 Tara composition is especially complex — twenty-one distinct forms of Tara arranged around the central Green Tara, each with unique attributes and colors.

Green Tara Thangka — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Green Tara and White Tara?
Green Tara is associated with active compassion and protection — she is depicted with one foot extended, ready for swift action. Her mantra is Om Tare Tuttare Ture Soha. White Tara is associated with longevity, healing, and serenity — she is depicted in full lotus pose with seven eyes (forehead, palms, and soles of feet) symbolizing her ability to see all suffering. Both are manifestations of the same compassionate energy.
Is the 21 Tara composition suitable for a beginner collector?
The 21 Tara is a complex composition with 21 individual deity figures, each with distinct attributes. For a first thangka purchase, a single Green Tara or White Tara is more impactful and affordable. The 21 Tara is ideal for experienced collectors, Buddhist practitioners, or meditation centers wanting a comprehensive Tara practice image.
